The following is an updated handbook released by the American Medical Association (AMA). It includes Resolution 509 (located at page 16 of the document) which rescinds AMA’s earlier statement calling on physicians to stop prescribing hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 treatment.
The resolution said, “…our American Medical Association rescind its statement calling for physicians to stop prescribing hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine until sufficient evidence becomes available to conclusively illustrate that the harm associated with use outweighs benefit early in the disease course…Implying such treatment is inappropriate contradicts AMA Policy H-120.988, ‘Patient Access to Treatments Prescribed by Their Physicians,’ that addresses off-label prescriptions as appropriate in the judgement of the prescribing physician”. AMA adds that it will soon release a new statement to notify patients of this change and to clarify the potential benefits of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 treatment.
Editor’s Note: This statement from AMA is powerful because it gives validity to the claims of many doctors who have found hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to be effective in treating early stage COVID [see Hydroxychloroquine can dramatically ease the COVID-19 crisis]. This statement comes at an opportune time, as some governments are returning to lockdowns and preparations for mass vaccinations for COVID-19 are already underway.
Another important implication of this statement is that it decreases the anxiety among at-risk population as they no longer have to wait for symptoms to worsen before they go to the hospitals. It can also help decrease the burden on the health care system, as well as reduce the panic caused by the lack of treatment for COVID-19. Through early detection and early treatment, lives of COVID-positive patients can be saved.
If COVID-19 can be treated and serious complications of the disease can be prevented through HCQ, then lockdowns and other coronavirus restrictions are no longer necessary. More importantly, the it also means that risky vaccines are no longer necessary.
